Chat interface for writing

I use Guided Write a lot. AutoComplete is too likely to go in a different direction than I had in mind. However, the current card-based workflow is inconvenient and breaks the creative flow, because the text appears in a separate place so you cannot immediately see how it fits into the preceding text.

What I would like to have is a separate chat input field below the prose window, where I can enter what happens (i.e. the input to Guided Write). Then the text would appear at the cursor location in the prose window in a slightly different color, just like text inserted from a card currently does, and not yet editable. In the chat input field there would also be forward and backward icons and the version currently being viewed (“< 1/2 >”), which allows you to create a new version for the current generated text and to switch between generated versions, and a length selector similar to current Guided Write. Finally the chat input field would have an Accept button that accepts the generated text, which adds it to the prose (changing color to the normal color of prose, and making it editable).

Below is a quick mock-up to illustrate the concept:

You can actually use Quick Edit for this. If you place your cursor at the point where you want to continue, hit ctrl (or cmd) k to open Quick Edit, then type in how you want to continue, then submit, it will insert text from that point forward.

Thanks for pointing this out! Quick Edit is indeed more convenient than Guided Write. I really like the ability to give further prompts in order to iterate on the generated text. Although there isn’t a dedicated control for regenerating the text, it looks like a follow-up prompt of “regenerate” works. Similarly, you can add a word limit to the prompt like “The fox challenges the dog to a race (50 words)”.

However, I am not sure whether Quick Edit uses the same model (Muse) for writing the prose as Guided Write does (when “Higher Quality” is switched on)? The documentation is not clear on this (but hints at it not using the same model), and although it seems mostly unfiltered, it sometimes gives strange artifacts (like a page full of latin).

Preferably you would also be able to edit the prompt while generating new versions and reviewing them. Pressing enter would then generate a new version using the new prompt. When switching between versions, the prompt would also change to the prompt that was used to create the version being viewed.

A cancel button would probably also be useful, if you decide that you want to write this particular prose manually instead.

For some reason pictures did not make it into the post. Trying again:
